The Five Buddha Families

English

The five Buddhas Vairocana, Akṣobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitābha, und Amoghasiddhi are often also called “the five Dhyani-Buddhas.” They represent the pure forms of the corresponding elements of our conventional world, reflected in outer (elements, colors, etc.), inner (afflictions etc.), and secret (wisdoms) symbols or representations. Every tantric being includes all five buddha families, individually emphasizing different main points.

In many texts und teachings we encounter different buddhas, bodhisattvas, and other deities. In the Vajrayāna, they are matched with the five buddha families with corresponding symbols, colors, and so on, and are typically depicted in the form of a mandala.

The diverse buddhas und deities make a connection between our ordinary way of being and a consciousness that is in line with the tantric view. They thus symbolize the nature of samsaric delusion as the five wisdoms of the buddhas. Hence understanding the five buddha families enables a deeper access to Buddhist meditations and especially the visualizations of the Vajrayāna.
