Conventional and Ultimate Bodhicitta
Conventional and Ultimate Bodhicitta
Bodhicitta (“the mind of awakening”) is the very foundation and heart of the Mahāyāna path. It is of two kinds—(1) conventional and (2) ultimate. (1) Conventional or relative bodhicitta is again twofold in terms of aspiration and application. Aspiration bodhicitta is the courageous attitude of thinking, “I wish to attain complete buddhahood in order to help all sentient beings attain the same state.” Once this aspiration has arisen, we engage in its application through the bodhisattva practices called the six paramitas (generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and prajña). Together, aspiration and application bodhicitta include the entire Mahāyāna path.
(2) Ultimate bodhicitta is nothing other than the true nature of our mind—buddha nature (inseparable emptiness and luminosity)—the fundamental ground of the Mahāyāna journey as well as its final fruition, rediscovered through the practices of conventional bodhicitta.
Konventionelles aund letztendliches Bodhicitta
