10 Things To Know About the Hīnayāna Before Practicing Vajrayāna

In the age of commercialized Buddhism and the mindfulness industry, to put it somewhat provocatively, the question is “Do you want something flashy or something that works?” At its root, Buddhism is not about short-term solutions, instant gratification, and glamor.
In particular, Tibetan Buddhism is known as “three-yāna Buddhism,” including the teachings of Hīnayāna, Mahāyāna, and Vajrayāna. The relationship between these three levels is illustrated by the analogy of a tall building: without a strong foundation (Hīnayāna), the stories of the building (Mahāyāna) will not be stable and the luxurious penthouse at the top (Vajrayāna) will fall off. Thus, certain key elements of the Hīnayāna and Mahāyāna are indispensable for the proper view and practice of the Vajrayāna. This talk samples ten such elements from the Hīnayāna.
